It's A New Year. Have You Inspected Your Pipe Markers?

Labels made with DuraLabel printers are so long-lasting and durable that we can forget they are there. But even DuraLabel labels need to be inspected on a regular basis. Here's what to look for:

1. Be sure pipe markers are in place in every location required by ANSI A13.1. There should be a pipe marker every 50 feet on straight runs of pipe. You should see a pipe marker on both sides of any penetrations, including penetrations through walls and floors. You should be able to identify the contents and flow direction from any location. For example, if some equipment is obscuring a pipe marker, another pipe marker should be installed even if the distance between pipe markers is less than 50 feet.

Pipe markers should also be located next to valves, flanges and Tee's.

2. Look for pipe markers that may be missing due to maintenance work. For example, if lagging was replaced the pipe markers may not have been replaced.

3. All pipe markers should be readable. Any that are dirty should be cleaned. This may be as simple as brushing dust off, or it may require using a cleaning solution. DuraLabel pipe markers are resistant to most cleaning solutions, but it's always a good idea to test the cleaning solution in the shop before using it on an installed pipe marker.

4. Look for pipe markers with corners that are starting to come loose. The corner is typically the first place label adhesive will fail. Depending on the environment even DuraLabel pipe markers may eventually need replacement. Cutting off corners that have come loose, in a rounded shape, works as a temporary repair by reducing the area exposed to air (which can dry out the adhesive).

Make a note of locations in which pipe marker corners are coming loose. This allows for replacement of pipe markers at a convenient time before they fail further. You may also want to evaluate the area and environment in which the pipe markers are located to determine if a different material might be better suited for making the pipe markers used in this area.

The general rule of thumb is that the pipe contents and flow should be easy to identify from any location and situation. If that's not the case, then changes to your pipe marking program should be made.

Ammonia leak in the news again...

Ammonia leaks are a serious threat to the health of workers, emergency responders and the surrounding community. It's also a more common issue than a lot of people recognize.

Last week about 3,000 pounds of ammonia leaked from a Molalla, Oregon berry packing plant before a HazMat team was able to close a defective valve off.

Crews arrived at the scene to find a white vapor cloud above the building. They described the scene like a blizzard inside. Initial fire crews attempted to enter the facility, but had to retreat after ammonia began burning through clothing and protective hoods.

Four firefighters experienced irritation around their head and neck during the response, but did not require hospitalization. Luckily, no one else was injured.

About 25 employees were working at the plant when the ammonia began to leak. Each were sent home immediately before emergency crews arrived.

If your facility relies on ammonia, make sure pipes and storage are properly marked. In this recent ammonia leak, we don't know what caused the valve to become defective or if firefighters would have benefited from improved hazard communication. Either way, take this as an opportunity to evaluate your facility's own ammonia pipe and storage system. Make sure it has the proper visual communication to alert workers and emergency responders to this serious hazard.

Prepare your workforce for the dangers of wind farms

Energy demands have created a growing boom for energy producing wind farms. The result of this boom has brought about many advancements in electrical generation and storage, but also new risks to workers.

In a 2008 Oregon wind turbine accident, a worker died in a tower collapse while working inside the hub area. Another worker, on his way down the ladder, was also injured. The third worker was outside the tower, when the collapse occurred, and walked away unharmed.

The findings documented in a later OSHA investigation found a lack of instruction was one of the leading causes for the accident. "Workers were not properly instructed and supervised in the safe operation of machinery, tools, equipment, process, or practice they were authorized to use or apply. The technicians working on the turbine each had less than two months' experience, and there was no supervisor on site. The workers were unaware of the potential for catastrophic failure of the turbine that could occur as a result of not restoring energy isolation devices to the operational position."

Having proper instruction to safely work on the complexities of a wind turbine is unquestionably a minimum requirement. However, similar accidents like this happen regularly to industrial workers with years of experience.

One of the best ways to decrease accidents to both new and long-time workers is proper labeling. Procedure labels can be placed in locations where workers actually need them and are much easier to refer to than paper instructions, which often get left back at the truck.

Structural collapse is not the only hazard facing workers who must maintain these power generators. Arc Flash is always a concern for workers who regularly work around high-voltage electricity.

Ensure Ammonia Pipes are seen and understood.

If your facility utilizes a freezer or other refrigeration system — there's a very good chance Ammonia is also being transported through pipes to these locations.

Do your workers know about them?

Make sure they do with compliant pipe marking information from the International Institute of Ammonia Refrigeration (IIAR). Their standards are used around the globe to help workers rapidly see and understand the system these pipes support, the physical state, pressure levels and flow direction.

Not only are these pipes a hazardous threat, accidents can result in steep fines.

In 2007, an explosion at an Oregon based AmeriCold facility released the toxic gas into their facility and surrounding neighborhood. Two employees, as well as a bicyclist who happened to be riding by when it happened, were sent to the hospital. Oregon OSHA investigated and issued 18 violations for the incident.

More recently, the same facility was fined $470,000 for 10 willful violations, four serious repeat violations and 22 other serious violations of the Oregon Safe Employment Act. Many of these violations were related to ammonia hazards.

Just how important is color to a safety sign?

When it comes to visual communication, color is one of the most critical elements used to convey information. OSHA and ANSI have standardized the use of red, orange, yellow, blue and green colors for specific safety sign applications.

These color standards help workers recognize the purpose of a label or sign sooner so they stay safe. Colors also highlight critical hazard information within a label or sign so workers can read labels and signs before exposing themselves to unsafe zones.

When a label or sign begins to lose its original color brilliance, its effectiveness to convey critical safety information is diminished. The result is an unsafe workplace.

DuraLabel recently performed a durability test on their own multi-colored NFPA Diamond Label to prove just how strong the colors really are. Using state-of-the-art testing equipment, DuraLabel subjected a multi-color label they offer and one offered by a leading competitor to the same exposures. The results were fairly dramatic.

As you can see in the image on the right, the competitor's multi-colored diamond began to fade within just two years. In fact, all of the red coloring is absent after the second year of exposure.

If you haven't taken the time to inspect your labels and signs for issues for some time, now is a great time to check them out.

You should be evaluating the overall condition of your OSHA Health & Safety Signs at no less than once every six months. Depending on the conditions of your work environment, this should help you keep tabs on this critical safety information.

Who knows what you may find. A number of signs may no longer be communicating the information you thought they were and that's a danger. If you should find a damaged label or sign; or one that's no longer crisp and clear enough to deliver its message from a distance, remove and replace it. Don't even think about trying to reattach it with glue, tape or the original adhesive. It's just not worth the risk.

Lack of "hazard communication?"

All too often, OSHA cites facilities for a lack of proper hazard communication. In fact, it's one of the most common violations facilities seem to make again and again.

Unfortunately, these violations raise their ugly heads in the news each time a catastrophic event occurs in a facility. Just like the recent explosion at the North Carolina ConAgra Plant. According to local news reports, the plant was cited for a lack of proper hazardous materials communication in 2006 and 2007.

At the time of this post, no cause has been determined for the explosion, but two workers are known dead and dozens injured. There is even a suggestion the explosion may have been caused by a bomb.

Still, ConAgra remains suspect in this explosion until a true cause is found. Should a bomb be ruled out, previous violations for a lack of proper hazardous material communication won't help their case.

This is the real cost for these violations and, of course, ConAgra is not alone. Facilities throughout the U.S. are regularly cited for this same violation and may not be taking it as seriously as they should.

Removing Label Backing

I have big hands and I keep my fingernails cut short. I don't know if these are related, but I also have trouble removing the backing from labels. It gets frustrating sometimes, and sometimes I mangle the corners trying to get the label to peel off the backing.

Other people seem to have the ability to easily slip a fingernail between the adhesive-backed label and the liner, and peel it off. I know that the best way to do this it to peel the label off the backing, instead of trying to peel the backing off the label. Yes, there is a difference. Yet, for me, getting the backing off is still the most difficult part of labeling.

UnSticky Stickers

At Christmas time we love to get out the decorations. We put up lights, hang stockings, setup the tree and put the plastic snowflakes on the windows. You know the kind that stick to the windows that don't have any glue on them. I always thought they were cool.

It turns out that DuraLabel has a supply very much like that. It's called Static Cling Labeling Supply. It's made from highly plasticized, transparent vinyl and it will stick to windows and other similarly smooth surfaces. This stock has the same durability and longevity as our other label stock. So what's the big deal? The backing has been sliced down the middle to make it easier to peel the backing away. Just crack and peel the backing to take it off. Hey, that's a great name I think we'll go with that: DuraLabel Crack & Peel Label Supply.

It comes in all the colors and sizes as our regular stock and will work with the DuraLabel 2000, Pro 300 & the 7000. So it's easy to remove the back from small labels as well as big signs.

We make the best durable vinyls in the labeling industry. No question about that. You can put them just about anywhere on just about anything. They stick and stay stuck, just like you wanted. Then the safety standard or government standards change and you need to put up new labels and signs.

Have you ever tried to stick a label on something cold? The adhesive is hard and it won't stick. I've been in refrigeration facilities where labels peel off without help. The problem here is most labels were not designed for extreme cold.

DuraLabel works with large companies in every industry. We created a supply for these extreme cold conditions called Cold Storage Tape. This tape can be applied in temperatures as low as -10°F (-23°C) and will continue to stick in temperatures as low as -40°F (-40°C). Phosphorescentt tape! Again with the long and involved jargon. It's not so bad, phosphorescent tape glows in the dark. Easy? Yes, how is that useful? I'm glad you asked.

Have you ever been in the middle of an industrial building when the power goes out? It's a little different than being in your home. Homes are designed with people in mind. The architects want to make sure there are plenty of windows and natural light. It makes the house more valuable and easier to sell. Industrial buildings, on the other hand are designed with business in mind. Most non-retail business does not need costly windows and natural light so architects tend to leave that out. Back to the point, if you are in the middle of one of these buildings and the lights go out there are usually no windows or skylights to help you see.

This is where phosphorescent materials come in. If the lights are out more than a minute or two you will probably want to get to somewhere you can see better. You also will want to do this without bumping your head on something or falling down stairs. If exit paths and paths to safety are marked with glowing material you can see where you are going and avoid getting hurt. Mark stairwells, paths and put up signs to make sure this happens.

Ok, the power has been out for 20 minutes and you have called the power company. They say that the power won't be on for another 4 hours. There are still things that need to be done to keep the business running. Sometimes there are shut-down procedures a facility needs to go through before it can close up shop. You might have some critical things that still need to get done before the power comes back on. Going back into the facility with flashlights and being careful might not be enough. Having the phosphorescent markings in your facility might add the extra precaution you need to prevent accidents. Shut-down procedures and other information is also useful when printed on this glowing stock.

I seem to remember a movie some years ago where someone peeled the label off of one item and put it on the other. It wasn't because they wanted a better price, but they did want to pass the fake item off as the original. In some industries protecting the integrity of a product is very important.

Our clever product developers here at DuraLabel have Tamper evident Tapes to solve this problem. Tamper evident, what is that? Put simply, it is easy to see if someone has messed with your labels. There are two types of this label:

VOID Tape - When removed this label leaves a bit of itself behind in the form of a void stamp. If this label was to be transferred to another object it would be useless because the label would have obvious VOIDs all over it (see right). This is great for labels that identify unique products or brand identification.

Destructible Tape - This is a new thing for us at DuraLabel. We are used to trying to make our supplies indestructible. Well this label will last a long time just like the rest of our line, but if someone tries to remove it they will have a very frustrating time of it. It will come off in the smallest pieces leaving obvious traces of removal. Good luck trying to put them on another item.

With the release of the DuraLabel 2000 the DuraLabel family is growing. Imagine them on Thanksgiving sitting around the dinner table being thankful for all the safe and informed people there are in the world. All the dishes would be properly labeled in case some were not recognizable. The DuraLabel 7000 would have a big 7" sign on its place setting so everyone would know where it sits. The DuraLabel Pro 300 is printing out high resolution images of the dishes it likes and the DuraLabel Pro is quickly printing out labels to place on the food it wants to claim. The handheld DuraLabel 2000 gets to sit at the grownup table this year. They all look forward to next year and hope it will be another good year for the DuraLabel family.

DuraLabel Supplies are not limited to sticking to clean perfectly smooth surfaces like most labels. Graphic Products' standard vinyl tapes will stick to most reasonably smooth surfaces which is what most companies are looking for. So you bought a DuraLabel 2000 and you went around your facility labeling, ad-hoc, everything you could think of making your employees safe, informed and more efficient of course. Now what? Where else will you use your new portable, handheld and fun label prtiner? Try your corporate office. There are so many applications in the office environment for your little labeler.

A great example would cover your wires. The modern office workstation has a phone, computer, monitor and many other useful devices. Where do all those wires go and more importantly how do you know what to do when they get there? This is where wire wraps come in.Wire wraps are self laminating labels to help you organize wires. With computers, phones, printers, securtity cameras and many other systems now running on network devices it is easy to get confused.

Take a small warehouse office for example. It might have 10 workers with 10 computers, 2 servers, 2 printers, 10 phones, 3 security cameras, a credit card machine, a fax and a postage meter. All of these devices can use ethernet and since no one wants to see the wires they are all tucked away where it is difficult to trace them. What Is Arc Flash?

A recent survey revealed that only about 14% of electrical equipment installed prior to 2002 had the required arc flash labeling, and that much of the newly installed electrical equipment was also lacking proper arc flash labeling.

What is arc flash and why is labeling so important?

Arc flash is more than just an electrical arc, it is an explosive discharge of electrical energy caused by a short circuit. An arc flash happened in about 1/1000 of a second and generates temperatures that are greater than the surface of the sun. It results in a concussion that can throw people across a room. It vaporizes metal and the pressure wave can result in anyone near an arc flash inhaling molten metal into their lungs. Arc flash is very dangerous. Using labels and signs to warn people about the danger is an important part of arc flash safety.
